Russet Mites
Overview
Russet mites are extremely small eriophyid mites associated with bronzing, russeting and surface damage on crops.
Unlike spider mites, russet mites do not usually produce webbing and are often difficult to detect early because of their microscopic size.
They are important in:
- tomatoes
- peppers
- cannabis/hemp
- pears
- blackberries
- soft fruit
- protected crops
Typical symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- bronzing
- russeting
- corky skin texture
- dull foliage
- distorted growth
- stem bronzing
- fruit marking
- reduced vigour
Damage is often mistaken for:
- nutrient imbalance
- spray damage
- heat stress
- physiological disorders
Environmental drivers
Pressure often increases during:
- warm stable weather
- protected crop conditions
- dry canopy conditions
- dense crop growth
- prolonged crop cycles

Detection difficulty
Russet mites are extremely small and may require magnification for reliable detection.
Outbreaks are often identified only after visible crop symptoms develop.
This makes:
- early scouting
- symptom interpretation
- hotspot mapping
- trend monitoring
especially important.

IPM considerations
Integrated Pest Management programmes should focus on:
- early symptom recognition
- environmental stability
- hotspot detection
- movement hygiene
- avoiding unnecessary disruption
- preserving beneficial activity
