Leafminer Identification Guide

Overview

Leafminer identification begins with the mine pattern, but mine shape alone does not always confirm the species.

Most horticultural leafminer flies belong to the family Agromyzidae. Their larvae are small, pale, legless maggots that feed between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves.

Other insects, including moth larvae such as Tuta absoluta, also create mines but differ in appearance, behaviour and management.


Typical signs

Look for:

  • serpentine mines
  • blotch mines
  • pale feeding trails
  • dark frass lines
  • adult feeding punctures
  • larvae visible within fresh mines
  • exit holes
  • pupae on leaves or in growing media
  • premature yellowing or leaf collapse

Fresh mines are usually pale, moist-looking and actively extending.

Old mines are often dry, brown or collapsed.


Adult leafminer flies

Adult agromyzid leafminers are usually:

  • very small
  • dark grey or black
  • marked with yellow in some species
  • active around young foliage
  • attracted to yellow sticky traps

Adults may be difficult to identify reliably without magnification.

They commonly make small feeding and egg-laying punctures in leaves.


Feeding punctures

Female flies puncture leaves using the ovipositor.

These punctures may appear as:

  • small pale dots
  • short lines of white marks
  • clusters of feeding scars
  • damaged areas on young leaves

Not every puncture produces a mine because some are used only for feeding.


Eggs

Eggs are inserted inside leaf tissue and are rarely obvious during routine crop inspection.

They are usually laid:

  • in young leaves
  • close to the upper canopy
  • in soft actively growing tissue
  • near adult feeding punctures

The first visible sign is often a very short, narrow mine produced after the larva hatches.


Larvae

Agromyzid leafminer larvae are:

  • pale cream or yellowish
  • legless
  • without an obvious dark head capsule
  • hidden within the leaf
  • tapered at one end

They feed forward through the leaf tissue, leaving frass behind them.

Fresh mines may allow the larva to be seen when the leaf is held towards the light.


Pupae

Depending on species, pupation may occur:

  • inside the leaf
  • attached to the leaf surface
  • on lower foliage
  • within crop debris
  • in the growing medium
  • beneath benches

Pupae are commonly:

  • oval or barrel-shaped
  • yellow-brown when young
  • darker brown as they mature

Finding pupae confirms that the population has progressed beyond the active mining stage.


Serpentine mines

Serpentine mines are:

  • narrow
  • winding
  • irregular
  • often marked by a dark frass line

They frequently widen as the larva grows.

Typical agromyzid species producing winding mines include several Liriomyza species.


Blotch mines

Blotch mines are broader and less linear.

They may appear as:

  • pale patches
  • irregular transparent areas
  • collapsed leaf tissue
  • broad mines containing frass

Blotch mines can be caused by several leafminer groups, including moth larvae.


Frass patterns

Frass inside a mine can help with identification.

It may form:

  • a continuous dark central line
  • broken black pellets
  • scattered deposits
  • concentrated patches near feeding areas

The pattern varies between species and larval stage.


Exit holes

When larvae leave the leaf to pupate, a small exit hole may remain.

Exit holes indicate:

  • the mine is no longer active
  • the larva has completed feeding
  • a pupa may be present elsewhere
  • adult emergence may follow soon

Removing an old empty mine does not remove the developing pest if pupation has already occurred elsewhere.


Leafminer fly or Tuta absoluta?

Tuta absoluta is a moth whose larvae mine tomato leaves and may also attack stems and fruit.

Leafminer or leaf disease?

Leafminer damage may be confused with:

  • fungal leaf spots
  • bacterial lesions
  • nutrient disorders
  • spray scorch
  • mechanical damage

A true mine normally has:

  • an intact upper or lower leaf surface
  • a tunnel or blister within the leaf
  • frass inside the damaged tissue
  • a larva or exit hole in some cases

Disease lesions usually do not contain a feeding tunnel.


Leafminer or thrips damage?

Thrips damage usually causes:

  • surface silvering
  • black faecal spots
  • scarring
  • distorted young growth

Leafminers produce a distinct tunnel within the leaf rather than general surface silvering.

Leafminer or caterpillar damage?

Most caterpillars remove plant tissue completely, producing:

  • open holes
  • chewed edges
  • frass on the leaf surface
  • damaged flowers or fruit

Leafminer larvae remain enclosed within the leaf during feeding.

Tomato leafminer fly

Commonly associated with:

  • tomato
  • protected vegetables
  • ornamentals

Check:

  • newest expanded leaves
  • upper canopy
  • crop edges
  • incoming plants
  • propagation material
  • lower leaves with older mines
  • weeds and volunteer hosts

Use a hand lens to inspect:

  • adult flies
  • feeding punctures
  • larvae
  • pupae
  • parasitoid emergence holes

Signs of parasitism

Parasitised mines may contain:

  • dead leafminer larvae
  • parasitoid larvae or pupae
  • stopped mine development
  • emergence holes
  • empty larval remains

Avoid removing every mined leaf automatically where parasitoids are active.

Confirmation checklist

Leafminer activity is strongly indicated when several of the following occur together:

  • fresh serpentine or blotch mines
  • dark frass within mines
  • pale larvae inside leaves
  • adult feeding punctures
  • small flies on yellow traps
  • exit holes
