Leafminer Damage Symptoms

Overview

Leafminer larvae feed between the upper and lower surfaces of leaves, creating distinctive mines that reduce photosynthetic area and crop quality.

Unlike chewing insects such as caterpillars, leafminers usually leave the leaf surface intact while consuming the internal tissue.

Recognising fresh damage allows intervention before adults emerge and populations increase.


Early Symptoms

The first signs of infestation often include:

  • tiny pale feeding punctures
  • narrow winding mines
  • small translucent patches
  • larvae visible inside fresh mines
  • dark frass lines

Young infestations may be difficult to detect without close inspection.


Serpentine Mines

Most agromyzid leafminers produce long winding mines.

Characteristics include:

  • narrow tunnels
  • irregular curves
  • widening as larvae grow
  • dark central frass line
  • pale translucent appearance

Fresh serpentine mines usually contain actively feeding larvae.


Blotch Mines

Some species produce broader feeding areas.

Typical features include:

  • irregular pale patches
  • collapsed internal tissue
  • wider feeding area
  • scattered frass
  • transparent leaf sections

Blotch mines may eventually dry and become brown.


Adult Feeding Punctures

Female leafminers puncture leaves for feeding and egg laying.

Symptoms include:

  • tiny white dots
  • pale speckling
  • short rows of punctures
  • damage concentrated on young foliage

Heavy adult feeding may reduce plant quality before mines become obvious.


Frass

Leafminer frass is usually visible inside the mine.

It may appear as:

  • continuous dark line
  • black dots
  • broken pellets
  • irregular deposits

Fresh frass confirms recent larval activity.


Leaf Yellowing

As mining increases, leaves may develop:

  • yellow patches
  • chlorosis
  • reduced vigour
  • premature ageing

Large numbers of mines reduce the leaf's ability to photosynthesise effectively.


Leaf Collapse

Heavy infestations may result in:

Tomatoes

Cucumbers

Even relatively small infestations may make crops unsaleable.
