Overview

Sciarid larvae live in damp growing media and feed mainly on fungi and decaying matter, but high populations can damage fine roots and soft stems.

Host plants

Seedlings, cuttings, young roots and moist organic growing media.

Identification

Larvae are translucent-white, legless and have a distinct shiny black head capsule.

Damage and symptoms

Root grazing reduces establishment and may allow pathogens into wounds. Young seedlings and cuttings are most vulnerable.

Lifecycle and favourable conditions

Wet compost, algae, organic residues and continuously moist propagation areas favour breeding.

Monitoring

Use potato slices or similar media-surface baits to inspect larvae and yellow traps to track adults.

Management

Correct excess moisture, clean algae and residues, improve drainage and manage the full breeding area rather than individual pots alone.

Biological control and natural enemies

Steinernema feltiae, Stratiolaelaps scimitus and Atheta coriaria are commonly used within integrated programmes.

Biological control should be selected only after the pest has been identified and the crop, temperature, growing environment and pest pressure have been considered.
