If you’re planting for ladybirds and other beneficial insects, you don’t need a wildflower meadow. Many common garden plants are excellent for attracting them.

Some of my favourites are:

* 🌸 Lavender
* 🌼 Marigolds (Calendula)
* 🌸 Cosmos
* 🌼 Yarrow
* 🌸 Verbena
* 🌼 Coreopsis
* 🌸 Catmint (Nepeta)
* 🌼 Ox-eye daisy
* 🌸 Fennel or dill (if you have room)
* 🌹 Roses – once beneficial insects arrive, they’re often one of the first places they’ll look for aphids!

The key is to have flowers blooming throughout the growing season so beneficial insects always have a source of nectar and pollen. Also try to leave a few wild corners in the garden and avoid broad-spectrum insecticides, as these can kill the insects you’re trying to encourage.

A garden with a mix of flowers is usually far better for beneficial insects than a perfectly tidy one.
