Mealybug Environment and Risk

Overview

Mealybugs are favoured by warm, sheltered and stable protected-crop conditions.

Risk increases where crops have:

  • dense canopies
  • poor airflow
  • long production cycles
  • warm temperatures
  • repeated plant carryover
  • hidden plant structures
  • weak inspection routines

Temperature

Warm conditions generally support:

  • faster development
  • more generations
  • increased crawler activity
  • continued feeding
  • faster colony growth

Protected crops may support mealybug activity throughout much of the year.


Canopy structure

Dense plant canopies create protected sites around:

  • stem junctions
  • leaf axils
  • flower stems
  • fruit clusters
  • woody tissue
  • overlapping leaves

These sites protect colonies from disturbance and make monitoring more difficult.


Air movement

Poor airflow does not directly cause mealybug infestation, but it often accompanies:

  • dense canopy
  • sheltered microclimates
  • slow crop dry-down
  • reduced inspection access
  • persistent honeydew and sooty mould

Opening the canopy can improve detection and biological-control contact.


Seasonal risk in the UK

September–October Persistent colonies and crawler movement
November–December Reduced outdoor risk but continued protected-crop activity

Heated glasshouses and indoor plant production may support continuous generations.


Crop carryover

Carryover plants are a major risk because they can:

  • retain hidden colonies
  • harbour egg masses
  • introduce crawlers into new crops
  • undermine clean-crop starts
  • support year-round persistence

Stock plants should be monitored particularly closely.


Ants and honeydew

Ant activity can indicate hidden mealybug colonies.

Ants feed on honeydew and may:

  • protect colonies from natural enemies
  • move between infested plants
  • interfere with biological control
  • reveal otherwise hidden hotspots

Environmental management

Useful practices include:

  • opening dense canopy where practical
  • removing heavily infested material
  • isolating incoming plants
  • cleaning crop supports and benches
  • reducing plant carryover
  • controlling ants
  • maintaining regular scouting
  • protecting established beneficial populations

Environmental management supports biological control but does not replace direct pest management.


Biological-control conditions

Cryptolaemus montrouzieri

Cryptolaemus montrouzieri is most useful where:

  • mealybug colonies are established
  • temperatures are sufficiently warm
  • disruptive pesticides are avoided
  • predators can move through the crop
