Caterpillar Identification Guide

Overview

Correct identification is the foundation of successful caterpillar management.

Many chewing pests produce similar feeding damage, but their biology and management differ considerably. Before selecting a biological control programme, confirm that the pest is actually a caterpillar.

Most economically important caterpillars are the larval stage of moths rather than butterflies, although both groups belong to the order Lepidoptera.


What is a caterpillar?

Typical caterpillars have:

  • three pairs of true legs behind the head
  • several pairs of fleshy abdominal prolegs
  • a distinct head capsule
  • chewing mouthparts
  • a soft segmented body

Unlike beetle larvae, caterpillars usually move by gripping the surface with both true legs and prolegs.


Eggs

Eggs are usually laid directly on host plants.

They are commonly:

  • cream
  • pale green
  • yellow
  • white

Most are deposited on the underside of leaves close to suitable feeding sites.

Finding eggs early allows biological control before feeding damage begins.


Newly Hatched Larvae

Young caterpillars are often only a few millimetres long.

Typical features include:

  • pale body colour
  • dark head capsule
  • limited feeding damage
  • feeding on leaf undersides
  • very small frass pellets

Young larvae are generally the easiest stage to manage biologically.


Mature Caterpillars

Older larvae become much larger and consume significantly more foliage.

Typical characteristics include:

  • well-developed head
  • obvious body segmentation
  • larger prolegs
  • increased mobility
  • heavier feeding
  • larger frass pellets

Many species change colour as they develop.


Common Signs

Look for:

  • irregular holes
  • chewed leaf edges
  • skeletonised leaves
  • windowing
  • damaged flowers
  • damaged fruit
  • silk
  • frass
  • rolled leaves

Fresh frass usually indicates active feeding nearby.


Frass

Frass (droppings) is one of the best indicators that caterpillars remain within the crop.

Fresh frass is often:

  • dark green
  • brown
  • black

It may accumulate:

  • on leaves
  • inside flowers
  • around fruit
  • beneath feeding sites

Looping Caterpillars

Some species, such as loopers, appear to "measure" the leaf as they walk.

This looping movement occurs because they possess fewer abdominal prolegs than many other caterpillars.


Cutworms

Cutworms usually feed close to the soil surface.

Typical symptoms include:

  • seedlings cut at ground level
  • plants collapsing overnight
  • feeding after dark
  • larvae hidden beneath soil during daylight

Night inspections are often required.


Sawfly Larvae or Caterpillars?

Sawfly larvae are commonly confused with caterpillars.

Pay particular attention to:

  • growing points
  • flowers
  • young leaves
  • lower foliage
  • crop edges
  • leaf undersides
  • developing fruit

Many species remain hidden during the day.


Common Mistakes

Growers sometimes mistake the following for caterpillar damage:

  • slug feeding
  • beetle feeding
  • sawfly larvae
  • earwigs
  • grasshoppers
  • mechanical damage

Always confirm the pest before treatment.
