Overview
Capsid nymphs are the immature stages of plant bugs in the family Miridae. Some species are plant pests, while others are useful predators, so correct identification is important.
Host plants
A wide range of vegetables, fruit crops and ornamentals.
Identification
Nymphs are wingless or have developing wing pads and move quickly when disturbed. Pest species often feed around young shoots, buds, flowers and developing fruit.
Damage and symptoms
Feeding punctures expanding tissue and may produce small holes, distorted leaves, aborted buds, malformed fruit or corky marks.
Lifecycle and favourable conditions
Damage is most noticeable when feeding occurs before leaves or fruit expand. Outdoor immigration commonly increases during spring and summer.
Monitoring
Tap foliage over a tray, inspect growing points and look for fresh punctures or distortion. Do not assume every mirid is harmful.
Management
Remove weeds that act as hosts where appropriate, protect vulnerable crops and confirm whether the species is predatory or plant-feeding before intervention.
Biological control and natural enemies
There is no universal biological-control programme for capsid bugs. Generalist predators and parasitoids may contribute, but management must be species-specific.
Biological control should be selected only after the pest has been identified and the crop, temperature, growing environment and pest pressure have been considered.
